=====The Institute of Sport History in Baden-Württemberg and the Sport Archive within the National Archive in Baden-Wuerttemberg – Example for a Regional Centre of Culture of Memory in German Sports History=====

Three presentations give an overview of the development, scopes and aims of the regional [http://www.ifsg-bw.de Institute of Sport History in Maulbronn], a pictorial little town at the border of Württemberg and Baden. Maulbronn is famous for its Cistercian monastery which was acknowledged as a world cultural heritage by the UNESCO in 1993. At the same time, Maulbronn became home of the new founded Institute of Sport History of Baden-Württemberg which could be realized by an initiative of regional sports clubs, academic sports scholars, and various persons engaged in the cultural sector. The institute started as a sport historical documentary Centre of the history of gymnastics and sport. The continuous collaboration with regional clubs, archives, museums, and different cultural institutions was respected by regional public and politics. Finally, this collaboration led to the institutionalization of a special sports sector in the [https://www.landesarchiv-bw.de/web/48099?org_id=61501 National Archive of Baden-Württemberg], located at the capital Stuttgart. Both institutions support clubs, public, historians, and persons working in the sector to collect sport historical documents of any kind, to support sport historical education, and to cultivate an adequate culture of memory with respect to sport and gymnastics.

Three representatives of the institute demonstrate parts of their work which are considered as exemplary for systematic sport historical work and culture of tradition. Martin Ehlers presents the institute of Maulbronn, Markus Friedrich, the work of the sports section of the National Archive in Stuttgart, and Lothar Wieser, who is an expert of the sport history of the city of Mannheim, demonstrates the use and work with daily newspapers as relevant source for sport historians.
